Health Benefits
It turns out….. Beer can actually be good for you!! As with anything, however, moderation is key. The American Heart Association considers 12ounces to be one beer drink. For a man, a drink or two a day is considered moderate while one beer a day for women is moderate. Drinking more than this on a regular basis can lead to liver damage, certain cancers, heart problems and more. Moderate drinking, however can do all kinds of good things for your body so read on!!
What is in your average beer?
0mg of cholesterol
0g of fat
13g of carbohydrates
25mg of sodium
Protein, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, and vitamins B, B2, and B6
Alcohol
*Remember though, although there is no fat, a 12-ounce regular beer can contain up to 150 calories. Even your average light beer still has around 100 calories. Too many rounds of this tasty treat can lead to a beer belly.
It is pretty common knowledge that a glass of wine a day aids in heart health. This fact was brought to attention by the French Paradox. The French have a relatively low rate of heart disease despite their high saturated fat diet. It is thought that their daily glass of red wine makes this possible. Lately, however, more and more studies are showing that moderate consumption of beer wields similar heart healthy benefits.
What’s in it for you?
Builds strong Bones!!- Due to its high silicone content Beer can protect your bone health. The silicone aids in stimulating bone building cells and enables the deposit of calcium and other minerals into bone tissue. Participants in a study who had one or two beers a day had a higher bone mineral density than those who drank less or more. Remember though, that while this higher density can prevent osteoporosis and fractures, too much alcohol can lead to brittle bones and more bone fractures. Would you like the strongest bones? India Pale Ales(IPA’s) tend to have the highest levels of the mineral.
Lower that Blood Pressure!!-In the Nurses Health Study, over 70,000 women aged 24-42 were tested for a relation between alcohol consumption and hypertension. Those who drank moderate amounts of beer had less hypertension than those who drank wine or spirits. It also reduces stress and aids in sleep.
Beer and your Arteries!!- In a survey of 130,000 adults, male beer drinkers had a statistically lower risk of coronary artery disease than men who drank wine or spirits. The polyphenols can lower ones chances by up to 40%. Beer is rich in B-vitamins and folates, which can be found in leafy greens. These help keep homocysteine blood levels low . High levels of the chemical homocysteine are linked to an increased risk of heart disease. Alcohol can also increase your HDL cholesterol levels in the bloodstream and help to decrease blood clots which can rupture and plug an artery.
Brain Boost!!- Beer can make you smart!!! Adults over the age of 65 who drink 1-6 drinks a week have a lower risk of developing dementia than those who drink less or more. A 2006 report in an American Heart Association journal showed that a drink or two a day may be linked to better cognitive function in women. Women who had up to one drink a day had a 20% lower risk of brain function decline. B-12 and folic acid lower the risk for anemia and promote normal growth, good memory, and concentration.
Better Kidneys!!- Finnish researchers have found that men who drank beer had a 40% lower risk of kidney stones. Kidney stones are little deposits of salt and minerals such as calcium that can form in your kidneys. Beer's hops may help prevent kidney stones by slowing the release of calcium from bones. Hops are rich in magnesium which reduces the risk of kidney stones as well.
Lower your Cancer Risks!!- You don't have to drink beer to reap its benefits. Marinating steak in beer could eliminate up to 88% of carcinogens that form when pan-frying meat. Cooking meat at high temperatures can create cancer-causing compounds known as heterocyclic amines (HCA's) and it is believed that the sugars in beer help prevent HCA formations. Xanthohumol, a flavanoid compound found in hops, plays a major role in the chemoprevention of cancer.
Digestion!!- Beer possesses many digestive properties. These include the stimulation of gastrin, gastric acid, choelescystokinin and pancreatic enzymes. The soluble fibers in beer clean the digestive tracts. Beer is also a diuretic which increases urination. This facilitates the removal of toxic and waste materials from the body.
